What is migration? The movement of people from one place to another. Usually involves permanent relocation. People began migrating out of African between 1-2 million years ago. Why do people leave? Push Factors – something that causes people to leave an area Pull Factors- something that attracts people to a new location

Economic One of the largest factors in migration is economic Overpopulation Lack of employment opportunities Higher wages More job opportunities Variety of job opportunities
Ravenstein’s Principals of Migration Every migration flow generates a return or countermigration. The majority of migrants move a short distance. Migrants who move longer distances tend to choose big-city destinations Urban residents are less migratory than inhabitants of rural areas. Families are less likely to make international moves than young adults.
