INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION WEEK at West Lee Middle School November12th to 16th Vincent Pienaar Your friendly Visiting International Faculty Teacher

My Goal is to: Introduce students and staff to their International Teachers. Promote cross-cultural understanding and break down cultural barriers. Celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange. Prepare Americans for a global environment Attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences in the United States.

To achieve my goal the following will happen during the IEW as approved by the SLT : The international teachers will do the morning announcements : V. Pienaar - November 13 B. Fearns - November 14 Katja Heinrichsen - November 15 Antonio Perozo - November 16 We will introduce ourselves, recite the pledges, read the announcements, and explain International Education Week

Each morning Channel 1 will introduce the teacher doing the announcements. Please leave enough time for the students to see this introduction of their international teachers as they need the information for the competition. Starting on Tuesday November 13 th, there will be a competition by grade level with prizes to be won. We will ask Mrs. Farrow to make a drawing Monday morning during announcements. The competition will end Friday. Please photocopy attached entry forms. Completed entry forms to my box please.

Wednesday, November 14: During Staff development, we will provide a snack indigenous to our countries to the staff. We will also share recipes with the staff. Friday November 9th we will set up a world map in the cafeteria (all students and staff visit the cafeteria) and the international teachers will post their pictures, flags, summary of themselves and artifacts from their country on the map. It will be a colorful, eye-catching display. Mr. Booth agreed to put 400+ International fiction/non fiction Library books in the library, so that students can check them out. If they do a book report on the book, the Language Arts teachers will give them credit for it. November 20th, 8:15 in the cafeteria: I will do a Cultural Presentation on South Africa and will have a video conference with a student or students in South Africa. Questions will be submitted beforehand to the South African student/s so that they can prepare themselves for the interview. At the same time, we are in the process of … …setting up an international partnership with D.F Malan High School in South Africa. We are not sure yet if it will be a wiki space or pen pals or both.

A Map Painting on Friday, November 16th by my 6th Grade Advance Math Students and whoever would like to participate. The sidewalk between the cafeteria and the library. The main purpose of this exercise is: 1.Increase geographic awareness. 2.Promote team-building skills. 3.Provide opportunity for school-wide project involvement. 4.Create a fun, hands-on, experiential learning experience. 5.Students will learn how to plot and label points on a coordinate plane. 6.Students will be exposed to the names and locations of important cities in a foreign country. 7.Students will learn what the latitude and longitude lines are and how to use them.

Map Painting Activity "If our young people can't find places on a map and lack awareness of current events, how can they understand the world's cultural, economic, and natural resource issues that confront us?" John Fahey, president of the National Geographic Society
