Agenda Essay 1 Introductions Conclusions

Introductions Guidelines Your introduction has three functions: It gives a sense of your voice as a writer and the kind of writing (genre) you have produced. It orients your reader and gives your reader a sense of the scope of your argument. It engages the reader.

Introductions Guidelines It is likely that your narrative will begin your essay. Your introduction might actually consist of two paragraphs instead of one. The thesis statement might appear at the end of the second paragraph.

Introductions Guidelines You should not simply state the points of your essay in the introduction. Make sure that your introduction flows into the first paragraph after the introduction.

Introductions Write your introduction or modify your existing introduction.

Conclusions Guidelines Your conclusion has the following functions: Creates the final and possibly the most lasting impression from your essay. Unifies and completes the essay. Clarifies the purpose of the essay. Clarifies the importance of the change you are recommending. There might be a reference again to the narrative.

Conclusions Guidelines You should not introduce major points or questions in your conclusion (some additional information might be absolutely necessary, but you do not want to undercut the purpose of your essay or create confusion about your topic). Do not use the phrase “in conclusion.”

Conclusions Guidelines Make sure that your conclusion is justified by the arguments that you have presented in your essay. The scope of your conclusion should be slightly broader than the scope of the body of your essay. It is ok for you to acknowledge the limitations of your argument. Is further research necessary? Is further action necessary?

Homework Continue revising your rough draft. You might need to just type the introduction and conclusion. Tomorrow we will go over citations and documentation.
