The idea behind doing these projects is to establish the feasibility of more comprehensive projects in these regions. For instance, we need to establish an effective and reliable cooperation with local scientists and/or government organizations, to make sure that the collaboration is of mutual benefit, to make sure that we can deploy the instruments and reliably get data back from them in the long term, and to make sure that the sites are suitable in terms of low noise and correct location to address the problem being studied. Sumatra: real time telemetry, station security and stability in remote locations, Taiwan: how do we best interact in places where there is already an excellent local infrastructure but perhaps lacking the ideal in-country analysis capabilities. In this case we have investigated the approach of bringing Taiwanese students and researchers to Caltech, interacting with them here, teaching Caltech classes in the field in taiwan where both Caltech and Taiwanese students can participate. Mexico: a country with infrastructure but where a few gaps can be filled to dramatically increase the scientific return and our ability to resolve a particular problem. Mexico has excellent scientists, and we already have strong collaborative ties with several groups of researchers. The Tectonics Observatory can involve postdocs, graduate students, and visiting students from Mexico in order to maintain true collaborative efforts on analysing this plate boundary system.
