Forming adverbs

What is an adverb? A modifier or word that modifies other elements in a sentence: a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. Answers questions such as How? How long? How much? When? and Where?

What is an adverb? Even in English adverbs are most likely made from adjectives. In English, most adverbs end in –ly. These adverbs are used mostly for modifying verbs. Not all words that end in –ly are adverbs and not all adverbs end in -ly.

What is an adverb? An adverb that modifies a verb is generally more flexible: it may appear before or after the verb it modifies ("softly sang" or "sang softly"), or it may appear at the beginning of the sentence ("Softly she sang to the baby").

Making adverbs The –ly in Spanish is –mente. There is more than just adding –mente to the word. When using more than 1 adverb that has –mente, only the final adverb adds the –mente. If the subject is masculine you still make the adjective feminine.

Making adverbs If the adjective is genderless, such as fácil, then you just add –mente. Easy becomes easily. Fácilmente If the adjective is gendered, such as lento, then you have to change the adjective to the feminine form, and then add –mente. Slow will become slowly. Lento lenta lentamente

Examples Él come rápidamente.-He eats quickly. Los niños cantaron alegremente.- The children sang happily. La niña ríe ruidosa y alegremente-The girl laughs loudly and happily. El niño corre rápida y tranquilamente por el bosque.-The boy ran quickly and quietly through the forest.
