An Exercise in Characterization and Conflict Dear Abby An Exercise in Characterization and Conflict

Step 1: Write a one page letter from your main character to Abby asking for advice. Explain: Who you are (remember, you’re the character in your book!) What the problem is Why you’re confused Ask for advice at the end Sign off with a pseudonym Think about how this character would talk!!!

Step 2: Read through the letter you are given. Write a one page response to this person as an advice columnist. Include: Your thoughts on the problem itself Any questions you have about this conflict Advice for how to solve/deal with this An encouraging ending…or not encouraging… Sign off as “Abby”
