Affirmative Action: Unequal Protection By: Leah Barnas, Natalie Capatina, Yazmin Gerardo, and  Megan Nadolski Affirmative Action: Unequal Protection

Affirmative Action A policy favoring those who fall into discrimination Minorities

Who is a minority?

Mr. Powers vs. Mr. Graglia Mr. Powers thinks that “race as one factor in an overall holistic view of the candidate” helps the university build a diverse campus, an achievement which has “an educational value for all of our students Mr. Graglia thinks “lowering standards to admit members of preferred groups is a bad idea”.

Debate Opportunities for minorities Diversity Equal opportunities For affirmative action Against Affirmative action Opportunities for minorities Diversity Equal opportunities Discrimination

Decision Making Original policy Appellate Judge decision Abigail Fisher in Supreme Court Ruling

Non-Discrimination States banned How many are affected? Acts passed What’s its purpose?

Diverse Opinions Shift in goals: Remedying social justice to fostering diversity Asian-American vs. Minorities Effects if Supreme Court forbids race-conscious admissions

Diverse Opinions Continued Black students who take challenging courses in college often drop out and those who go to law school often fail their bar exam Texas banned race-conscious entries of colleges and found that the results for Hispanic or African Americans entry was the same or greater to when they did not ban race conscious entries  Mr. Taylor and Mr. Sander think that instead of looking at race, they need to find the poor students who stand out and are very academically smart. Take them over looking for the diversity balance

Discussion What are your thoughts on affirmative action? Do you think it’s worth continuing to spend money on scholarships and take enrollment of minorities who, in some cases, are not academically capable to perform at those schools? If so, why? If affirmative action was banned, what would happen to the economy and those people who would no longer be admitted? Should we be concerned with them falling back into poverty? What do you think about basing admission off socio-economic status versus race?
