ADDRESSING THE K-5 NEXT GENERATION SCIENCE STANDARDS AN INQUIRY-BASED APPROACH DANIEL C BAKER INTERNATIONAL SCIENCE EDUCATOR INDEPENDENT EDUCATIONAL CONSULTANT

PURPOSE OF THIS SESSION To consider what inquiry-based learning looks like in practice. To develop a deeper understanding of the different levels of inquiry. To present one inquiry-based approach to addressing the elementary Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).

SESSION INQUIRY QUESTIONS What does inquiry-based learning look like in practice? What is the difference between the different levels of inquiry? How can I address the elementary Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) using an inquiry-based approach?

ENGAGEMENT TASK: CONTINUUM How comfortable/familiar/knowledgeable are you about the Next Generation Science standards (NGSS)?

ENGAGEMENT TASK: CONTINUUM What do you know about inquiry-based teaching and learning in Science (or in general)?

EXPLORATION TASK 1: LEVELS OF INQUIRY What are the different levels of inquiry?

GUIDED/DIRECTED INQUIRY LEVELS OF INQUIRY BANCHI & BELL (2008) HIGH CONFIRMATION INQUIRY STRUCTURED INQUIRY GUIDED/DIRECTED INQUIRY OPEN INQUIRY LEVEL OF TEACHER INVOLVEMENT LOW

GUIDED/DIRECTED INQUIRY LEVELS OF INQUIRY BANCHI & BELL (2008) HIGH STUDENTS ARE GIVEN A QUESTION AND A PROCEDURE TO FOLLOW. RESULTS ARE KNOWN IN ADVANCE. PURPOSE IS CONFIRMATION THROUGH EXPERIENCE. STRUCTURED INQUIRY LEVEL OF TEACHER INVOLVEMENT GUIDED/DIRECTED INQUIRY OPEN INQUIRY LOW

GUIDED/DIRECTED INQUIRY LEVELS OF INQUIRY BANCHI & BELL (2008) HIGH STUDENTS ARE GIVEN A QUESTION AND A PROCEDURE TO FOLLOW. RESULTS ARE KNOWN IN ADVANCE. PURPOSE IS CONFIRMATION THROUGH EXPERIENCE. STUDENTS are provided with the question and procedure TO FOLLOW. PURPOSE IS TO generate an explanation that is supported by the evidence collected in the procedure. LEVEL OF TEACHER INVOLVEMENT GUIDED/DIRECTED INQUIRY OPEN INQUIRY LOW

LEVELS OF INQUIRY BANCHI & BELL (2008) OPEN INQUIRY HIGH LOW STUDENTS ARE GIVEN A QUESTION AND A PROCEDURE TO FOLLOW. LEVEL OF TEACHER INVOLVEMENT STUDENTS ARE provided with only the research question. theY MUST design the procedure (method) and to test the question and the resulting explanations. OPEN INQUIRY LOW

STUDENTS form questions, design procedures for carrying out an inquiry, and communicate their results LOW

STRENGTHS AND CHALLENGES What do you see as some of the strengths of using the different levels of inquiry as instructional approaches in your school / with your students? What do you see as some of the challenges you may face when trying to use the levels of inquiry as instructional approaches in your school / with your students?

GUIDED/DIRECTED INQUIRY ELABORATION TASK Choose one (or more) NGSS that you currently teach or could be asked to teach. Plan either: ○ A lesson ○ An assignment ○ An experiment ○ A project Using one of the different levels of inquiry CONFIRMATION INQUIRY STRUCTURED INQUIRY GUIDED/DIRECTED INQUIRY OPEN INQUIRY You can make use any of the resources provided to help with this task
