‘Trigger’ Animations Normally in PowerPoint animation/effect sequences run linearly, i.e. they follow a predetermined timeline. (Please note: only available in PowerPoint XP (2002) and 2003) By using ‘Triggers’ you can jump out of this timeline and add a little more interactivity. To see how this works use the Drawing toolbar (View menu, Toolbars > Drawing) and draw two shapes, any sort, e.g.

‘Trigger’ Animations Right-click one shape and select Custom Animation. On the right of your screen click Add Effect and choose an effect, e.g. Appear. Now click the down arrow to the right of the animation entry and select Timing. Then Triggers and ‘Start effect on click of:’ Choose your other shape.

‘Trigger’ Animations When you run your show you should only see your second shape. If you hover the mouse over it, the cursor will change to a hand. Click the shape and the first shape should appear. If you don’t click it won’t appear, the slideshow will run as normal either way. Trigger animations add interactivity and choice to your presentation.
