Finding the Area of Right Triangles
To find the area of a triangle you multiply the base and the height and divide by 2. In a right triangle the height and base make the right angle h b
Example 1: Find the area. A = (16in)(14in) ÷ 2 A = 112in2 14in 16in 16cm A = 112in2 14in 16in
Example 2: Find the area. A = (20cm)(22cm) ÷ 2 A = 220cm2 22cm 20cm
A = (12ft)(15ft) ÷ 2 A = 90ft2 Example 3: La has a sand box in the shape of a right triangle. She is making a cover for the sandbox using plastic. The base of the box is 12ft and the height is 15ft. How much plastic does she need to cover the sand box? A = (12ft)(15ft) ÷ 2 A = 90ft2
Closure How is finding the area of a right triangle different from finding the area of a triangle that is not right? How is it the same?
