Reya El-Salahi visits a Jewish Settlement and the west bank Watch the videos and think of reasons for the conflict in the middle east http://www.bbc.co.uk/education/clips/zvjvcdm http://www.bbc.co.uk/education/clips/zkt9jxs 04/12/2018

Reasons for the conflict in the middle east 1 There is a shortage of land 2 There is a shortage of water 3 There are different religions (Muslims and Jews) 4 Both claim that important places such as Jerusalem should belong to their religion 5 The Jewish people are afraid of being attacked by their Muslim neighbours 6 The Palestinians claim that they are fighting injustices such as having their land taken from them 7 The people learn not to trust each other from a young age

Explain why some Christians do not agree with war Jesus said that those who live by the sword will die by the sword Joseph Fletcher said "Do the most loving thing and war is not". Some Christians might be conscientious objectors and refuse to go to a war because their conscience tells them that war is wrong. There are some Christians such as Quakers who are pacifists and who think that war can never be justified. Often modern wars are not just in the sense spoken of by Thomas Aquinas for example they often do not try all other methods first and many countries have weapons of mass destruction. In the 10 Commandments (Exodus 20) it says thou shalt not kill and war involves killing. Some people think that Martin Luther King showed how we can change things peacefully and so war is not needed.

How would you use this slide to help you in an answer for why Christians would or would not agree with war? 04/12/2018

Read the key words again and then say which of the key words are shown in the next slides? aggression attacking without being provoked bullying intimidating/frightening people weaker than yourself conflict resolution bringing a fight or struggle to a peaceful conclusion exploitation taking advantage of a weaker group forgiveness stopping blaming someone and/or pardoning them for what they have done wrong just war a war which is fought for the right reasons and in a right way pacifism the belief that all disputes should be settled by peaceful means reconciliation bringing together people who were opposed to each other respect treating a person or their feelings with consideration the United Nations an international body set up to promote world peace and cooperation weapons of mass destruction weapons which can destroy large areas and numbers of people world peace the ending of war throughout the whole world (the basic aim of the United Nations)
