The Handmaid’s Tale Epigraphs

Agenda Journal Discussion of The Handmaid’s Tale Chapters 1-6 Epigraph Discussion DEAR By the end of class, you will be able to, explain the significance of epigraphs in a novel.

Journal Decisions, decisions. They range from the tiny (Should I have tuna or turkey for lunch?) to the immense (Should I accept that scholarship or follow my dreams and become a cowboy?) If you could go back in time and change one decision you’ve made, what would it be and why?

Handmaid’s Tale Test 1

Epigraphs The first epigraph Atwood chose to include in The Handmaid’s Tale comes from Genesis 30:1-3. Consider the significance of the passage (a.k.a. explain the social implications of what the passage talks about). Then make a prediction about what relevance that passage might have in The Handmaid’s Tale. The second epigraph Atwood includes is from Jonathan Swift’s satire, A Modest Proposal. Any thoughts about why?????? Decipher the third epigraph to the best of your ability. What possible meanings could it have? Discuss two or more.

Chapters 21-23 are due next class! DEAR Chapters 21-23 are due next class!
