BOOKWORM AWARD This is a whole school initiative, so adults should aim to win awards too (we might want to be ‘creative’ about this so that the children see lots of modelling!). Certificates are awarded at the first Celebration Assembly of each half term, having been prepared over the holiday by the class teachers using Sparklebox templates in the Bookworm folder on the server (to be printed on card). Class teachers are responsible for accrediting awards for their children – they should only award certificates for lists of books that are appropriate for the child’s reading level (ie a capable Y6 reader would be accredited for chapter books; a reception child would be accredited for picture books, etc) Each academic year there are four levels of Award: bronze; silver; gold and platinum. The criteria for listing a book title towards award are that the books have been shared (strategy for EYFS/Year 1, plus less able); read to an adult (ie to incorporate the reading scheme); or read individually (to challenge more able). It can be a mix of these. The count does not revert to zero when a certificate is awarded. In each instance, the book title has to be countersigned by an adult to confirm it has been shared or read – initially using the list on the inside front cover of reading journals; moving on to special Bookworm record sheets when this is full (adults in school will record their reading on these Bookworm record sheets). At the end of year Prize Giving the top awards will be made: Platinum (triumphant trumpet roll), together with a prize (a book voucher?). Very challenging criteria for this so that it is a real ‘gasp of breath’ moment. The next slides are a presentation at the first Celebration Assembly of the year.

At St. Anthony’s we all love books! We are all aiming to win our very special Bookworm Awards – grown ups included! At the start of every half term, Mrs Stacey will give out certificates to everyone who has shown that they are growing into a bookworm. How will this work?

What counts? Any book you read or share with a grown-up should be recorded in your usual Reading Journal and the title signed by an adult to prove you read it with them, to them or by yourself. This includes your school reader, library book or books from the class collection, Blue or Red boxes or one from your bookshelf at home. At the front of your Reading Journal keep a list of all the books you have read. Just before each half term holiday show your list to your class teacher if you think you have won an award. They will decide if you have!

Your list will grow quickly! As soon as you run out of space in your Reading Journal, ask an adult in your classroom for a Bookworm Journal sheet – they will know exactly what you mean because they will be filling in one too!
