Bell ringer: Is water created or destroyed? Why or why not? Nitrogen Cycle Bell ringer: Is water created or destroyed? Why or why not?

Law of Conservation of Mass Matter can neither be created nor destroyed. So when a puddle evaporates, water isn’t being destroyed. Instead is has changed from liquid water to gaseous water. The same law applies to all matter on Earth.

Elements of Life

Nitrogen Nitrogen is a very important element found in living organisms. All living organisms need nitrogen to live because it is a key component of DNA. Much like water, nitrogen is recycled constantly through the nitrogen cycle.

Nitrogen Cycle Nitrogen can be found in many different forms: Nitrates Nitrites Ammonia Atmospheric nitrogen

Nitrogen Cycle Note that there is no way for nitrogen to go directly to the animal or plant. It is first converted thanks to bacteria!

Nitrogen Nitrogen Fixation- when bacteria change nitrogen from atmospheric form (unusable) to a usable form.

Nitrogen in Fertilizer Most of the time when you fertilize plants, you add nitrogen to the soil. Fertilizer also includes Phosphorus and Potassium

Math Practice The numbers on a fertilizer bag tell the percent of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Complete the math practice sheet in class.
