Micanopy Cultural Center Our Goal: To locate a cultural center in an environmental and socially conscious way.

Social Criteria Provide equal access for residents Locate near complimenting land uses Locate near existing historical facilities. According to our data, there are no schools in Micanopy

Environmental Criteria Locate away from existing flood plains Locate away from environmentally sensitive areas Locate in an area with well drained soil

Our Process Census Block Data: Select by Attribute.: Population Density Gradient (Locate Highest population densities) Historical Locations: .25 mi. buffer (walking distance) Census Block Data: Select by Attribute Locate Outside of Flood Plains and Wetlands Locate outside of Conservation Areas Locate Outside of Poorly Drained Soils Locate Site using Geoprocessing, Clip where .25 mile walking distance buffer overlap, and outside of environmentally sensitive areas.

Where is Micanopy 11 miles South of Gainesville Off exit 374 on Interstate 75. 1 square mile.

Population Density The most dense population areas are on the west side of 441. Total Poplulation: 650

Population Age and Sex Most of the population in Micanopy is between the ages 35-55 years old. Fifty/ Fifty male/female ratio.

Historical Points of Interest Downtown Micanopy is itself a historic district. William Bartram wrote about Micanopy in the seventeenth century.

Historical Downtown Sites Most of buildings in downtown Micanopy are historical. This walking tour points out 22 different sites.

Historical and Density Relations The high density population on the west side is outside the quarter mile walking distance of the historical town center.

Flood Plains Micanopy is surrounded by floodplains and marsh. Within the city limits is only small areas of flooding.

Conservation land There is a large conservation zone on the South West side of town. There is to be no building here.

Poor Drained Soils Most of the poor drained soils inside the city limits are on the North and East side of town where there is less population density.

Synthesis We want a site within walking distance of the existing historical facilities. Near highest population densities. Not in environmental sensitive areas or poorly drained sites.

Proposed Site Location

Looking Back Data of Micanopy’s land use or data of their vacant lands would help us determine a more specific spot for the cultural center. Micanopy is already a well centered town whose cultural center is well placed within the town in respect to its environmental and cultural features. Environmental Proposed site Cultural Cultural
