Sevier Middle School Volunteer Training Manual

Name Tags The first time a volunteers visits our school, they must show Identification at check in. Each time a volunteer enters our school, they must sign-in and wear the name tag in a visible location. Please always make sure to sign-in under volunteer and not visitor.

Dress Attire When visiting our school, we want to focus on you as the volunteer. Please remember that any clothing that displays inappropriate messages, fails to cover the midriff, costumes of any kind, clothing that exposes cleavage, or anything else that will create an unnecessary distraction. Examples of clothing that are not recommended: Tank tops with spaghetti straps, shirts with alcohol advertisements, mini skirts, etc. While staff are not allowed to wear blue jeans, volunteers are welcome to do so.

Classroom and Hallway Etiquette Teachers are very busy teaching our students. We try very hard to limit the amount of interruptions in the classroom. Please never visit the classrooms without the teacher’s prior permission. Our students are working hard to remember how to walk quietly in the hallway. It is important for adults to remember to set the example and travel quietly in the hallways. Our students love to say hello when they see a friend. When passing a class in the hall, a smile is appreciated from our volunteers but remember the goal is for the students to remain quiet.

Tutoring Volunteers who are visiting the school are very appreciated. Please ask for assistance if you feel you do not understand the assignment asked of you. Volunteers will never be asked to be alone in a room with a child. Please never place yourself in this situation.

Alarms Please treat all alarms seriously. If the fire alarm sounds, exit the building immediately. In the case of an intruder or intruder drill, all class will go on lock down. At this time, move away from windows and never answer the door even if it is the principal knocking. In case of a fire drill, please exit the closest door and remain outside until the classes return to the school.

Confidentiality Any student behavior issues observed while serving in the role as a volunteer are expected to remain confidential. Any discussions pertaining to a student that you are part of or overhear are also expected to remain confidential. You never know who may overhear your conversations. Remember that confidentiality is the best policy.

Copy Room Instructions The copy room can be a “hub” of activity. At times, the teachers may have items that are needed immediately. If an assistant requests the use of the copier for emergency copies, please accommodate this need. The two adjoining rooms of the copy area will sometimes be in use for teaching and meetings. While we ask for our staff and volunteers to always be respectful of their speaking voice, it is imperative to use a quiet voice during those times.

Copy Room Jobs Laminating- Instructions to follow Cutting Sharpening Pencils Copying

Copy Machine Instructions Always use the teacher’s paper who is assigning the job When the job is finished, return to the teacher’s paper box. If making copies, please see Ms. Moore for detailed instructions on using the copy machine.

Thank you Everybody can be great.  Because anybody can serve.  You don't have to have a college degree to serve.  You don't have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve.... You don't have to know the second theory of thermodynamics in physics to serve.  You only need a heart full of grace.  A soul generated by love.  ~Martin Luther King, Jr.
