Warsaw Ghetto in WWII by: Tyler TenEyck

On October 12, 1940, the Germans announced the establishment of a ghetto in Warsaw. The decree required all Jewish residents of Warsaw to move into a selected area, which German authorities sealed off from the rest of the city in November 1940. The ghetto was enclosed by a wall that was over 10 feet high, topped with barbed wire, and closely guarded to prevent movement between the ghetto and the rest of Warsaw.

Adolf Hitler, was the Fuhur, which means leader, for the German army. In 1940, the German Nazis began to relocate Poland's population of over 3 million Jews into a number of very crowded ghettos located in large Polish cities. The largest of these was the Warsaw Ghetto. There was no running water, no electricity, and they had little food. The Jews were forced to live on one bowl of soup per day. In order to help diminish the number of Jews, the hospital was intentionally placed outside of the ghetto walls. Due to starvation and disease, about 300-400 people died per day in the ghetto.

The Jewish people confined in the Warsaw Ghetto resisted the Nazi forces who were trying to send them to the Treblinka extermination camp. When the Nazis tried to clear out the ghetto, the Jews fought back. This battle began on April 19, 1943 and lasted 28 days. The resistance finally ended in the defeat of the Jews and the destruction of the ghetto.
