Employability Session Healthy Me Month Employability Session

3 Hours 3,000 3 Hours 3,000 Tutor Notes: Encourage learners to think about what the statistics might mean? It takes 3 hours for 1 pint of beer to be fully digested by the body. 3,000 people are killed or seriously injured in drink driving collisions in the UK every year. (If possible have the breathalyzers on the table and discuss with the learners, do they know what they are?) Link this discussion to the session objectives: Learners will be able to identify what a balanced lifestyle is. Learners will be able to explain the impact that substance misuse can have on individuals and the workplace.

Video https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=zXjANz9r5F0 Show learners the video clip about the effects of alcohol on the brain. The link is an example of the type of video that can be found on youtube. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=zXjANz9r5F0

What are the new drug driving laws? Are learners aware of the new legislation? Show learners the Drug Drive – Am I Fit To Drive Video (web link below) Useful websites https://www.gov.uk/drug-driving-law https://www.gov.uk/government/news/drug-drive-legislation-am-i-fit-to-drive

Lifestyles Activity Put learners in to pairs or small groups. Using the ipads – choose an app like popplet or provide learners with flip chart paper and pens. Ask learners to consider what they think a healthy lifestyle is and what an unhealthy lifestyle is. If appropriate encourage learners to feedback to the group.

So what is a balanced lifestyle? Encourage learners to have a further discussion based on their thoughts of what a healthy and unhealthy lifestyle is. What is a balanced lifestyle? Can they do anything on the unhealthy lifestyle and still have a balanced/healthy lifestyle?

Who? Encourage learners to consider who might be effected substance misuse. Focus on how many professional working people are affected by alcoholism and will also use substances recreationally. When does this become a problem?

Video Clip Show learners a video clip about how substance misuse can effect workplace productivity and safety. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=drQyLMCItBQ (Example video)

Drug and Alcohol Issues in the Workplace Using the ipads encourage learners to research the main issues. Perhaps one group could focus on the issues for the employer and the other look at the dangers for the employee? Consider what types of work could be more dangerous. The learners could produce a short report, have a discussion, create an article or a poster depending on age and ability. Drug and Alcohol Issues in the Workplace What do you think the impact of staff misusing substances could be?

Conclusion Bring the session to a close using appropriate assessment methods to check understanding. Link this back to the session objectives.
