Chapter 23: Chromosome Y DNA Sequence Chromosome Y 887 Name of Gene Name of Protein sex determining region Y.” SRY transcription H204 AA PROTIEN Amino acid sequence mRNA translation Cytoplasm A Cell Nucleus STTHE SEX-DETERMINATING REGION Y PROTIEN CAUSES A FEFETUS TO DEVELOP AS A MALE What does this protein make up or do? STREA STREAK GONADS Condition/Disease

Description Of SRY Symptoms and characteristics 1. Streak gonads 2.  Do not produce eggs 3.  Breast enlargement and body hair

Description Of SRY Who is affected? Swyer syndrome is a condition in which individuals with one X chromosome and one Y chromosome in each cell, the pattern normally found in males, have a female appearance. People with this disorder have female external genitalia and a normal uterus and Fallopian tubes. Outlook or quality of life They do not have functional gonads (ovaries or testes). Instead, they have undeveloped clumps of tissue called streak gonads. These abnormal gonads often become cancerous, so they are usually removed surgically early in life. Researcher: SW
