WHAT IS VIOLENCE? CHAPTER 7

VIOLENCE: Is the threat of or actual use of physical force against oneself or another person. Violence often results in injury or death.

EXAMPLES OF VIOLENCE: Accidents Suicide Homicide Rape – unwanted sexual activity All of which can happen to women and men!!

Data about Violence: 16,238 deaths by homicide— 44 per day 42,773 deaths by suicide—1 every 30 minutes On average, there are 321,500 victims (age 12 or older) of rape and sexual assault each year in the United States.

When a violent act occurs, who is affected? Victim Assailant Society

COSTS TO THE VICTIM Victim- is the person who is attacked and harmed physically. Outcomes: death, permanent injuries, loss of feeling and movement. Emotional scars and Physical Pain

COSTS TO THE ASSAILANT Assailant- is a person who physically attacks another person. May be seriously injured in a fight May feel guilt or shame, and live in fear of an act of revenge

COSTS TO SOCIETY Healthcare system- about 6 billion dollars a year to treat injuries resulting from violence. Taxpayers also must pay for law enforcement, courts, and prisons.

Common conflicts that can lead to violence?

Violence against women… May be the result from: Desire to control Media violence

Most acts of violence… Are committed by people they may know. The most effective way to deal with violence is through education.

HARASSMENT Unwanted remarks or actions that cause a person emotional or physical harm. Students who use weapons at school often are acting on the rage they feel as victims of harassment.

BULLYING The use of threats or physical force to intimidate and control another person. The bully chooses a victim who is less powerful in terms of physical and social connections.

What is the most effective way to stop bullying? GET BYSTANDERS INVOLVED!!

Bystander Person that is present at an event but not participating in it. *IF YOU SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING*

HAZING Is requiring a person to do degrading, risky, or illegal acts in order to join a group.

SEXUAL HARASSMENT Is any uninvited and unwelcome sexual remark or sexual advance. Making comments about a person’s body, unwanted touching, spreading rumors, crude jokes, anything that makes a person feel UNCOMFORTABLE!!

Ways to recognize sexual harassment Sexual comments Uncomfortable feeling Unwanted touching

What Can You Do? Speak up assertively when you feel disrespected. Use your refusal skills to reject unwanted sexual advances. Avoid having to be alone with someone you don’t trust. Report behavior that you think is sexual harassment to an adult.

HATE VIOLENCE Is speech or behavior that is aimed at a person or group based on personal characteristics. Range from gestures to physical attacks. Person might be targeted because of race, ethnicity, gender or religion.

DISCRIMINATION the unfair mistreatment of a person or group based on prejudices. Maybe hard for people to find jobs that fit their education and talents. May receive poor service in restaurants or live in certain areas.

Anger Is the root of most arguments and of many fights. Hurt pride and embarrassment Control your anger by asking for help!! Do not seek revenge (the fighting can escalate or grow more intense)

Dealing with conflicts: Choose the time and place carefully Stay Calm Negotiate a solution Do the unexpected Provide a way out Be willing to apologize

Mediation A process for resolving conflicts that involves a neutral third party. You can prevent fighting through mediation, through your role as a bystander, and by involving an adult.

How to negotiate a solution to a conflict? Offer a sincere apology Provide the person a way out Use good communication skills

Terms Peer Pressure – the need to conform to the expectations of friends. Instigators – A person who encourages fighting between others while they stay out of the fight.
