Honors Day 13: Things Fall Apart Return LOTF Essay Tests Discuss: cowries, new characters, wine from head Kola Harmattan: a powerful wind which hits Nigeria from November to March Homework: Read chapters 7-9 Students will be split into pairs. One partner will get a reader response prompt; the other will get a new critic prompt. [We will have discussed the theories during our study of Lord of the Flies.] Reader response: How do you relate to the characters so far, especially Okonkwo? What is your reaction to the society presented in the work? What have you learned, or what meaning have you gleaned from the work that is useful to you? New critic: What is the narrator’s tone? What style is being used to tell this story? What might the author’s theme be? Students will discuss their responses with their partners, trying to find pros and cons to each approach. As a large group, discuss: What are the benefits of these approaches? What gaps might one fill for the other?

The kola nut has a bitter flavor and caffeine content, and is chewed in many West African cultures, individually or in a group setting. It is often used ceremonially, presented to tribal chiefs or presented to guests. Chewing kola nut can ease hunger pangs. Frequent chewing of the kola nut can also lead to stained teeth. Among the urban youth of West Africa, kola nut is becoming less popular. Kola was originally used to make cola soft drinks, though today most of these mass-produced beverages use artificial flavourings. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kola_nut
