EQ: What are the main forms of energy? Describe their characteristics

What is (ME) Mechanical Energy? Energy of the position and motion of an object. ME = PE + KE Measured in JOULES! All objects in motion have KE and PE, so they have ME! Examples: car moving frog jumping Sounds being made

Page 449: (PE=w x h) (KE = 1/2m x v2) (ME= PE + KE) 1) 1000J 2) 2000J PE = 500 x 6 = 3000J 3) 5000J

How is there energy within an object? The particles within an object have potential and kinetic energy too.

What is Thermal Energy? The movement of the particles within an object. Measured as temperature (heat) Faster particles - more thermal energy - higher temperature. Slower particles -less thermal energy - lower temperature. Examples: Ice cream melting Fire Hairdryer

What is Electrical Energy? Energy due to electric charge. Electric charges can be moving (KE) or stored (PE) Examples: Static shock Lightning Batteries Power Lines

What is Chemical Energy? Energy that is stored within the bonds that hold chemical compounds together. Examples: Food Matches Cells Gasoline

What is Nuclear Energy? Energy that is stored within the nucleus of an atom. Examples Fusion (nuclei fusing together within sun) Fission (nuclei breaking apart)

What is Electromagnetic Energy? Energy that travels in waves that has electrical and magnetic properties Examples: Microwaves Light Xrays Ultraviolet Rays Radio Waves

Closing: 1) What is energy Closing: 1) What is energy? 2) Name the types of energies and give examples: Chemical, Electrical, Electromagnetic, Nuclear, Thermal. 3) Explain how all of these energies can be potential and kinetic.
