Uses of Nuclear Radiation

Uses of Gamma Radiation Beams of gamma rays are focused on cancer cells Gamma rays are ionising so they kill the cancer cells so they cannot divide further. Gamma sources can be placed inside the patient for limited amount of time at where the cancer is.

Leaking underground pipes Lets not dig up the whole road! Lets find the exact spot! Then fix the pipe!

Detecting leaking underground pipes A gamma emitting source is added to the liquid in the pipe. Where there is a leak in the pipe high levels of radiation is detected. A GM tube is used to detect the gamma radiation. Gamma radiation is used because it can penetrate through the ground.

Irradiation of Food: Radiation can destroy microorganisms that cause food spoilage.

Uses of Beta Radiation

Uses of alpha particles –Smoke Detector
