LO: What is Insolation? 24.5° December 21st 12 hrs 24 hrs 0 hrs 9 hrs Effect of Seasonal Changes - As Earth travels in its orbit the angle of insolation at any location varies with the season. - In New York state the lowest angle of insolation occurs on December 21st - The highest angle of insolation is on June 21st. - The angle of insolation decreases 1° for every degree of latitude away from the 90° insolation. Effect of time of day - On any given day the angle of the sun varies from zero at sunrise to its highest point at noon and back to zero at sunset. Variation in Duration of Insolation Duration of Insolation - The number of hours of daylight each day. Effect of Latitude and Season - On the summer solstice the northern hemisphere receives its longest duration of insolation, the southern hemisphere receives its shortest. - On the winter solstice the northern hemisphere receives its shortest duration of insolation, the southern hemisphere receives its longest. - On the equinoxes every location on Earth receives 12 hours of day and night.
