Writing Lab Writing Lab is an encore class that meets two times per cycle. This class focuses on improving written expression skills which; in turn, improves academic performance. The instructional program used in the Writing Lab is Step Up to Writing. This program provides the following:

explicit, research-based instructional support, with writing activities and strategies that lead to increased writing proficiency teaches multiple genres - narrative, expository, personal narrative, compare/contrast, persuasive, research use of multisensory strategies to address all levels of student writing ability students are provided a systematic approach that breaks writing skills into smaller steps

numerous opportunities to collaborate with peers by working in small groups or pairs as they learn new skills skills are sequenced, beginning with instruction and use of examples, then eliciting frequent verbal response from students Modeling, guided practice, both short and extended interactive practice, and frequent feedback on student work ensure that students experience success in writing activities

Home Access Center/ ESchools Parent Portal All grades are entered in eSchools. (HAC, Parent Portal) A zero indicates your child did not turn in the assignment (will be replaced with grade when your child submits the work within a reasonable time frame) If the area is blank, the assignment has not been graded yet. If the area has an “X” it means the child is exempt from that assignment. Grade Book updates: generally every two weeks. Grade Book notifications: weekly.

Schoology Homework assignments will be posted daily Marking Period Folders Submitting Assignments (Teachers will let the students know whether or not they are to submit assignments via Schoology or in the classroom)

Paradise Farm Paradise Farm Monday and Tuesday, October 16th and 17th Permissions slips will be sent out soon PLEASE consider chaperoning Clearances- Child Abuse, PA Criminal Background, DASD Volunteer Disclosure (on MC Website)

Student Responsibilities Independence is the goal for this year. Don’t drop things off at school if they forget them. Self Advocacy: Daily communication/questions regarding class or assignments should be communicated to the teacher by the student. (this can happen face to face, or through email)

Student Responsibilities Band/Orchestra class absence policy -Students must take ownership of their absence and get caught up during Advisory. Absences: Students are responsible for getting missed work due to illness or vacation through Schoology or talking to the teacher and making it up according to the teacher’s deadline. Again, the Advisory period is a great time to complete this.

Student Responsibilities Social Media- facebook, Instagram, snapchat, twitter, ask FM, Finsta…. all dangerous; please monitor your children’s devices. Ipads- educational tool; please discourage gaming. Ipads- student responsibility to charge each night; no charging stations provided.

Get Involved! A happy child is one who is involved in activities Students should feel a connection to their school Clubs are a great way to be involved in the school environment. New ones will be announced each day and posted on our website. Studies show students who are engaged and involved in their school are usually better students and stay out of trouble.
