Identity i·den·ti·ty īˈden(t)ədē (noun) who someone is; the name of a person the qualities, beliefs, etc., that make a particular person or group different from others

Ayn Rand's Anthem is based on a society where the concept of an individual identity has been eliminated. Identity

In the general field of social sciences, identity can be more loosely defined in two ways: as how someone perceives themselves and how they are perceived within a group or affiliation. Identity

People construct their identity through internal processes or by belonging to a group People can be defined by four distinct identity types: leader follower independent drifter  Anthem

Individual Social Collective Multiple Stigmatized 5 Types of Identity

Individual Identity Individual Identity The things which give you a sense of who you are. Individual Identity

Social Identity Social Identity Offers little choice It’s imposed through the concept of social roles Social roles are best understood as a way of behaving which is imposed on a social group  Social Identity

Collective Identity Collective Identity Identity which is shared by social groups. Collective Identity

Multiple Identities Some sociologists argue that people have multiple identities. This explanation argues that the formation of identity is far more complex as issues surrounding things like social-class, gender, ethnicity, age, nationality Identity is a combination of all the above factors

Stigmatized Identity Those different from ‘normal’ people. A stigma is any undesirable physical or social characteristic. Disabled people are stigmatized because their disability is seen first and foremost. People treat those with stigmatized identities with contempt by poking fun at them, ignoring them or refusing to employ them. Stigmatized Identity

Your Assignment Define identify. Why does identity matter? What is YOUR identity? What would you say If someone asked you, “What is your identity as an individual?” Pick the most important aspect of identity and explain why it is the most important. DUE TOMORROW! Your Assignment
