Meiosis. Meiosis is a form of cell division where diploid body cells make haploid gametes. In humans, this means cells that have 46 chromosomes (2N) divide.

Presentation transcript:

Meiosis -A regular human cell has 46 chromosomes and is known as a diploid cell (having the full # of chromosomes or 2n).

Meiosis -In reproduction, something different happens; male and female sex cells come together. -Each sex cell has half the genetic material (23 chromosomes) needed for a complete human cell – Known as haploid cells (having half the # of chromosomes or 1n).

Meiosis -Interphase I: genetic material inside the cell -Prophase I: genetic material condenses into chromosomes -Metaphase I: chromosomes line up – but half on one side, half on the other side; crossing over can happen (when chromosomes mix with each other)

Meiosis -Anaphase I: chromosomes are separated from each other -Telophase I: cell begins to split apart into two -Cytokinesis I: two cells created – one with half on genetic material, another with other half of genetic material (NOT IDENTICAL)

Meiosis Interphase II: half of genetic material is in each cell   Prophase II: genetic material in each cell is condenses into chromosomes Metaphase II: chromosomes line up in each cell

Meiosis -Anaphase II: chromosomes are pulled apart in each cell   -Telophase II: each cell begins to split apart into two -Cytokinesis II: four cells are created, a pair of cells with half of genetic material that are mostly similar and another pair of cells which have half of genetic material that are mostly similar
