Logistics Any questions about HW1? Sending around sign-up for 1 on 1 meetings This time at your place Please have all your past assignments on hand Are we all good with mentor session times? Lunch at Victor’s (Thur. ~11:30-12:30) Better times? Sign-up? Mentor Session Today Peer review of first paragraph of HW1 More on vivid language; minimal use of “to be” Thanks for feedback on Monday! Due Monday: Reading questions; HW1

Group Exercise Brainstorm on what evidence exists for human-caused climate change Evaluation step How reliable is this evidence? Why does it matter? What are the predicted consequences if evidence is real?

Rain Words I What things can you say based on this data? Which words have more of a connotation of cold; which wet? Are their associations between dry/wet and cold/warm? What statistics would you like to calculate on this raw data? What further information would it tell you?

Rain Words II Does it matter if we use data from just one of the mentor sessions or both? Should we consider them separately? What to the averages tell us? How close is each students value to the average (on average)?

Returning to Climate Change

Correlation ≠ Causation There may be confounding or hidden variables! What is a possible hidden variable for this graph?
