Map Scale Geography

Scale The ratio between a representation and the thing that it represents.

Distance Scale A scale that is used to measure the distances between locations on a map by “using a line, with separations marked by smaller intersecting lines, similar to a ruler.”

Small Scale Map -“A map depicting a large area, such as an entire country, is considered a small scale map. In order to show the entire country, the map must be scaled down until it is much smaller. A small scale map shows more territory, but it is less detailed.” (1) -Mapsoftheworld.com

Large Scale Map “Is closest in size to what it represents (map of Old Town Albuquerque) It shows less area but more detail.” (CK pg. 103)
