Paragraph 3 Dr Manette had been mentally disturbed by his long years alone in prison and his hair had turned white. All day long he worked at making shoes, as he had done in prison. Now he could not live in peace unless his door was locked. Dr Manette realized that the sister must have been very badly treated. Her brother had been wounded in a fight by the Marquis St. Evremonde's brother. Both brother and sister died within a few hours. So he left France, preferring to give up the fortune that would one day come to him, and went to live in England. Paragraph 2 Some time later, Charles Darnay found at a bank in London a letter from France addressed to him, or rather to the Marquis St. Evremonde, for his father and uncle were now dead. On reading it, he found that a servant of the family in France had been put in prison, through no fault of his own. So he returned to France to try to rescue him. However, on his arrival in Paris he was recognized as a noble and thrown into prison.
