Cherokee County School District Jennifer Garland & Judy Withey Understanding Balanced Literacy Information for Parents of students Kindergarten through 5th grade Cherokee County School District Jennifer Garland & Judy Withey

Objective This presentation has been created to help parents visualize and understand the balanced literacy approach and to provide strategies to effectively support your child’s instruction in reading, speaking, listening and writing both at home and in the classroom.

As a parent of an elementary student in Cherokee County, what do I need to know?

New resources have been adopted

GUIDED READING

What Does Guided Reading Look Like in the 2nd Grade? Guided Reading Small Group and Stations

What Does Guided Reading look like in the 5th grade? Classroom Management

BALANCED LITERACY FRAMEWORK

What do students do each day? Each day, students read. Each day, students have structured talk about their reading. Each day, students listen to an adult fluently read aloud. Each day, students write something meaningful. Balanced Literacy uses authentic, multi-level and cross-curricular material; It releases responsibility for learning from the teacher to the student; and provides continuity from grade to grade.

GRADES & ASSIGNMENTS

The Read Aloud at Its Finest… Lester Laminack Unwraps the Read Aloud You don’t have to read like Lester to read to your child, but it’s fun to try!

Reading to a Child Reaps Rewards! These pictures say it all!

Since reading is such a critical skill, without a strong foundation, children simply can’t flourish in School When we spend time teaching students to read, they will learn to appreciate and love reading as well as the importance of reading to learn.
