Justice and Wrath Propitiation has to do with God’s judgment and wrath God’s wrath=His hatred for and working of judgment against evil Why does God have wrath? God is holy (other, righteous, pure) and is against anything that is unholy and unrighteous (Isa 6:3-5) God is a just judge and will bring complete justice to the world (Rom 2:5-11) He will punish evil according to what it deserves He will reward good according to what it deserves (God is good to be just, He is not looking for people to punish) Therefore, God is against and hates sin. God can have nothing to do with sin, and in His love for holiness and justice, His wrath will come against sin. (Rom. 1:18; Ps 97:10)

Justice and Wrath We are unholy—we are not righteous but are sinful by nature (Rom 3:10-12; Eph 2:1-3) We are unjust—we have broken God’s law and hurt others and this world (Rom 3:19-20; 8:7) We are sinners—we are under God’s wrath (John 3:36) Because of His Justice and Wrath, God is not safe for unholy, unjust sinners

How is God’s Wrath Removed? Propitiation to save the day In the Old Testament God gave the Israelites a way to offer sacrifices to atone for their sins. An animal was sacrificed in place of the person who had committed the wrong. Day of Atonement (The sin offering goat and the scapegoat; Lev 16) These sacrifices were never perfect but were temporary. A better sacrifice would have to be made to satisfy God’s wrath (Heb. 10:1-4) In the New Testament Jesus as our propitiation means His perfect sacrifice for sin completely satisfies God’s justice and wrath against us (Heb 10:11-14) Propitiation=Jesus’s sacrifice removes God’s wrath Propitiation!

Love and Mercy Why did Jesus do it? Jesus could offer Himself because He is sinless. Jesus chose to offer Himself because He loves us He took God’s wrath on Himself out of incredible love for us. (1John 4:10; Rom. 5:6-9) God’s wrath against us individually is nowhere near the wrath Jesus took and felt from the Father for all of our sins (Isa 53:6, 10) Jesus bore it all willingly and with joy (Heb 12:2) God’s greatest wrath and greatest love are in the cross To bring us to our loving Father and to eternal life lived to its fullest in true happiness and greatest joy (Ps 16:11) His perfect love removes the fear of wrath and gives us the joy of love. We never have to fear God’s wrath as His children (1John 4:18) Christians are no longer under God’s wrath, but are always under God’s love (Rom 8:35, 37-39)
