Mounting the mandibular cast A demonstration of two different techniques to get the same result Dr. Howard Strassler
Mounting casts using CaStix
Soak the cast in water to prepare it for mounting Soaking also makes it easier to score and notch the cast
Preparing the cast for mounting Hold Buffalo knife with palm and thumb grasp Score the cast using the Buffalo knife Long indentations paralleling the alignment of the posterior teeth
Preparing the cast for mounting Arrows point to notched areas Long indentations paralleling the alignment of the posterior teeth Notches in the anterior and posterior areas Red ovals indicate indentations (scorings)
Screw the mounting ring tight to the mandibular member of the articulator Be certain there is no stone between the mounting ring (mounting plate) that would interfere with full seating Note orientation of mounting ring
CaStix- a standardized device For accurately articulating casts Cyanoacrylate adhesive with accelerator
Technique for placement of CaStix Maxillary cast related to articulator with facebow transfer Articulation of maxillary and mandibular casts
CaStix tried on for positioning and to note placement of adhesive- minimal of three sites Adhesive applied CaStix positioned Add mounting stone and close articulator with weight on top
Accelerator applied 3 to 4 CaStix placed for stabilization
Stabilized casts placed on articulator Screw maxillary cast with mounting ring tight to articulator Make certain it is fully seated Turn articulator upside down Wet mandibular cast with wet paper towel Wet paper towel
Place maxillary cast on articulator being certain it is fully seated 3-5 lb Place maxillary cast on articulator being certain it is fully seated Add mounting stone and close articulator with weight on top
After mounting stone has set CaStix set are removed by torquing sticks side to side separating them from base Plastic pieces can be removed with Buffalo knife or left on cast
After mounting stone has set add additional stone to create a smooth, neat mounting This mounting will be used for diagnosis, treatment planning and patient presentation.
