The Roman Empire Divides After the death of Marcus Aurelius > Pax Romana ends Political violence Political violence & instability becomes common 50 year span > 26 different emperors Social & Economic Problems High taxes for govt & Army place a burden on working class Farmland overworked > not producing > Farmers leaving their farms

Attempt at Change Emperor Diocletian divides the empire into two Why? Western part & Eastern Part To slow inflation he sets prices on goods Required farmers to stay on their farms Emperor Constantine Grants toleration to Christians New capitol in eastern roman empire > Constantinople All these reforms are temporary

Invasions Threaten Empire Germanic people living on border Huns migrating from central Asia cause Germanic people to flee to the roman empire Germanic people include > Visigoths, Ostrogoths, Vandals, etc. Roman legions could not stop invaders > loss of territory Attila the Hun pursues conquest of much of Europe More and more Germanic people push into Roman Empire 476 Rome falls
