Phase Change

Chemistry Name________________ Experiment #16 Section_____Date_____ Phase Changes Name(s) of Lab Partner(s)

Purpose To graph the change in temperature of a substance using data collected every 15 seconds

Lab Safety

Procedure DAY ONE 1. Obtain an empty beaker, stopwatch and thermometer 2. Have a teacher bring a heated test tube of lauric acid to your lab table and place in beaker 3. Add a thermometer and record temperature every 15 seconds until the temperature is constant (check with teacher before stopping)

Procedure (con) DAY TWO 1. Fill beaker half way with water and place on hotplate 2. Place test tube with lauric acid and thermometer in beaker and heat on 7 and record temperature every 15 seconds 3. Heat until the temperature is constant (check with teacher)

Data See attached graphs and data tables Observations: Two similarities between the graphs 1. 2. Two differences between the graphs

Conclusion We looked at the melting and freezing of lauric acid. Lauric acid melts at ______ degrees Celsius. Lauric acid freezes at _________ degrees Celsius.
