How to Summarize 11H

Goal: To summarize articles for the research paper Reminder: For your research paper, you will need to summarize for at least 5 sources.

What is the purpose of a good summary? A good summary is a lot like taking the notes and the textual evidence you will need to build into your paper. You can’t be too detailed and at the same time you do not want to be too broad.

For newspaper articles A good summary will include: Important statistics that help you answer your research question. Anecdotes from the article A personal experience that a person in the article faced that is integral to matching up to your research questions Scenarios or situations that relate to your topic

Newspaper articles continued Don’t talk about specific people unless… They are a person of prominence The person’s story is integral to your topic

Website Information When you summarize from a website Organizations Gather statistics Gather specific details that are important for your topics Historical Information Make sure you gather information about facts that you did not know. Facts that you do not know prior to doing research need to be cited.

Creating Your Summary Follow either the Stop and Jot Sheets Summarize Template

Creating Summary Continued You should include some direct quotes. These quotes will be used in your actual research paper. Indirect quotes Even if you are paraphrasing it (putting it into your own words), you still need to cite it.

How do I cite Go to easybib.com when creating your Works Cited for your final paper For citing throughout your research paper, use this website as a guide for how to cite. http://bcs.bedfordstmartins.com/everyday_writer/docsource/1b.html Example: We know books/plays/short stories are author’s last name and page number (Miller 22) This is not the case for every text. This is why you need to use the website above.
