character- any person, animal, or creature in a story Dynamic characters change. Static characters stay the same.

characterization how the author makes the character believable Methods of characterization: Direct Characterization Direct statement that tells about the character Indirect Characterization Author shows what the character is like through actions, dialogue, feelings, etc.

protagonist & antagonist Main character in a story Not necessarily the “good guy” Antagonist = Character who causes problems for the protagonist Not necessarily the “bad guy”

setting Place Time Social Conditions Weather Conditions One or more of these may have a huge impact on the story

conflict the main problem that drives the action in the story

conflict Can be internal Or external

exposition Sets up the story; introduces characters, setting and conflict

goal What the character wants or is working toward; relates to conflict

complications- Events that make the conflict more difficult to resolve Usually take place during the ASCENDING ACTION of the story

climax Highest point of interest, action or emotion in a story

resolution or denouement How the conflict is resolved (it can be left unsolved)

theme 2 Main Definitions: A main idea being developed or examined in the novel The message or lesson the author attempts to express through his/her writing

mood The feeling that the author creates through setting, dialogue and action

Point of view (POV) Perspective from which the story is told Narrator is NOT necessarily the author! The narrator is NOT always reliable & trustworthy! Types of Narration: 1st Person Narration 3rd Person Limited 3rd Person Omniscient
