PLOT STRUCTURE
PLOT THE SEQUENCE OF EVENTS. EXPOSITION – the beginning of the story which gives background information Characters are introduced and setting is established. Antecedent Action – events that have occurred prior to the opening of the story. Mood (Atmosphere)– the emotional feeling created inside the reader. Mood is created by descriptive words (diction), imagery and dialogue.
Initial Incident – the first thing that happens in the story to cause a problem (a conflict). This sets the plot in motion.
Rising Action – Tension builds up as complications occur, and characters encounter challenges or obstacles. These are the small events that occur to advance the plot and build tension.
Climax – the highest point of action in the story.
Falling Action – the conflict is resolved Falling Action – the conflict is resolved. The fate of the characters is revealed.
Conclusion (Denouement) – Loose ends are tied up; the ending of the story. Not all stories have a conclusion. For example, some end in a cliffhanger.
