1 Corinthians 11/29/17 Professor Tate

The Situations in Corinth: Bragging about Baptism Each of you says, “I belong to Paul,” or “I belong to Apollos,” or “I belong to Cephas,” or “I belong to Christ.” Has Christ been divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crisps and Gaius, so that no one can say that you were baptized in my name. (I did baptize also the household of Stephanas; beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized anyone else.” (1:12-17)

The Situations in Corinth: Lawsuits among Believers When any of you has a grievance against another, do you dare take it to court before the unrighteous instead of taking it before the saints? Do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if the world is to be judged by you, are you incompetent to try trivial cases?…I say this to your shame. Can it be that there is no one among you wise enough to decide between one believer and another, but a believer goes to court against a believer—and before unbelievers at that? (6:1-6)

The Situations in Corinth: Speaking in Tongues To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. To one is given through the spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these area activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses. (12:7-10)

The Situations in Corinth: Speaking in Tongues Pursue love and strive for the spiritual gifts, and especially that you may prophesy. For those who speak in a tongue do not speak to other people but to God; for nobody understands them, since they are speaking mysteries in the Spirit. On the other hand, those who prophesy speak to other people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation. Those who speak in a tongue build up themselves, but those who prophesy build up the church. (14:1-5) If anyone speaks in a tongue, let there be only two or at most three, and each in turn; and let one interpret. But if there is no one to interpret, let them be silent in church and speak to themselves and to God. (14:27-28)

Paul’s Teaching For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. (12:12-13)

“The Gift of Love” Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude; it does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things (13:4-7)

What’s Their Deal? “All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are beneficial. “All things are lawful for me,” but I will not be dominated. (6:12) Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some of you say there is no resurrection of the dead? If there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised, then ou proclamation has been in vain and your faith has been in vain…But each in his own order: Christ the first fruits, and then at his coming those who belong to Christ (15)
