ActionAid… ActionAid is an international developmental organization, with presence in more than 50 countries. It works with the residents of the poorest countries of the world in order to eliminate hunger and injustice.

Action areas… We operate development programs in more than 50 countries in Africa, Latin America and Asia, supporting 14 million poor and marginalized people who live below poverty line. Since 1998, ActionAid Hellas, supports 54 communities in 16 countries of the developing world, with the active participation of 42.000 Greek supporters.

Why the developing world? The level of poverty in the developing world is the difference between life or death. If we take into consideration that: one child dies every 5 seconds from hunger, that is 300.000 children every day 80 million children in the world don’t go to school when the annual spent on primary education in the world is 12 billion dollars(=half of the amount spent every year in the USA for ice creams!) 90% of HIV positive people live in developing world-every day the virus kills 8.200 people

Ma Luthuli is 45 years old. She has 3 children and her only source of income is one hectare of poor quality land. She has been on the waiting list for a government grant for land distribution for 15 years. Most of the food Ma Luthuly grows is to feed her children and herself. There is a small part she can spare to sell at the local market, and this covers the transport cost to school for the eldest child and some other bills. 2 years ago her husband died. From the time of his death her husband’s brothers have been trying to take her land from her, using customary law and the local chief to do this. Ma Luthuli worries that one day she may face witchcraft accusation, an accusation often cooked up in vullages like hers in order to take the land and house from widows. Human Rights Obligation Duty Bearers Rights Holders Causes POWER

Development Education The Development Education Department of ActionAid Hellas was established in 2000 when it first started implementing educational programs in schools. Our vision To create educational opportunities in order to cultivate critical thinking and awareness of the global reality, so that children, young people and those involved in their education, can take action at a local, national and international level towards an equal and sustainable world.

What is Development Education Developmental Education is based on values such as equality, solidarity and cooperation. It is a dynamic educational process aimed at understanding the changing world and our interaction with it. The ultimate goal is to involve citizens in shaping a just and sustainable world in which political power and resources are fairly shared and human rights guaranteed for all people.

Key concepts of Development Education Social justice Sustainable development Democracy and citizenship Interdependence and globalization Human rights Diversity
