Introduction Fish aggregate below Floating objects – natural & man-made (incl. FADs) http://oceanexplorer.noaa.gov/explorations/07philippines/logs/oct4/media/fado_600.html This bamboo raft is the float for a "bayao," which translates as "resting place." Like other fish aggregating devices (FADs) used around the world, this bayao was placed in the open ocean to attract fish, such as migrating tuna, that use it for shelter. The tuna can then be caught in nets. The raft is tied to a long nylon rope, which is weighted to the ocean floor with a cement block. About 30 feet down, coconut leaves woven together stream out from the anchor line, 10 feet in all directions, forming a mat under which fish (such as migrating tuna) hide. Objectives Describe how data from the Floating Object Record (FOR) can be used List the 4 situations that require the completion of the FOR Demonstrate ability to complete the FOR
Sampling priorities Estimate total catch for each gear deployment; Record vessel activity continuously each day on board; Estimate total catch for each gear deployment; Collect random samples for catch composition of each set and document species retained and discarded; Describe all floating objects sighted, especially those involved in a fishing set; Subsample catch for lengths; Record all sightings and interactions with marine mammals and sea turtles; Record fishing gear characteristics.
When to complete the FOR? Investigate Deploy/retrieve floating object Set within 250m of floating object NOT for sightings (4D on Daily Activity Log)

Activity X Captain provided additional detail regarding the FAD specifications since he deployed it originally (back in 2008).
Activity X 17 Captain provided additional detail regarding the FAD specifications since he deployed it originally (back in 2008).
Activity 110m Captain provided additional detail regarding the FAD specifications since he deployed it originally (back in 2008).
