10/25/13 Starter: 1.How do passive and active transport help a cell maintain homeostasis? 10/25/13 Osmosis/Diffusion Lab Application/Connection/Exit: Osmosis.
Osmosis.  Energy requirements?  No energy required  Modes of passive transport?  Diffusion through cell membrane  The movement of a substance from.
Osmosis.
Diffusion Particles in a solution move from an area of more concentration to an area of less concentration. Particles must be small to cross the cell.
Passive Transport Section 4.1.
Passive Transport 1. Diffusion 2.Osmosis 3.Facilitated Diffusion.
Cell Transport Osmosis and Diffusion.  Particles in constant motion  Run into each other and randomly spread out  Particles move from an area of high.
Objectives 7.3 Cell Transport -Describe passive transport. -Describe active transport.

C ELL T RANSPORT Chapter 5. PASSIVE TRANSPORT Diffusion.
Take out your homework. Osmosis/Diffusion Osmosis/diffusion – particles move from high concentration to low concentration No energy needed It’s the ONLY.
Getting Into and Out of Cells Cell Transport. Types of Cell Transport Passive Transport - no cellular energy required to occur - goes with the concentration.
TEST: FRIDAY 11/11 CELL TRANSPORT. CELL MEMBRANE PERMEABILITY Semi- permeable— allows small substances to pass through freely Larger substances must pass.
Passive Transport Does not require The diffusion of __________
Processes for maintaining homeostasis Osmosis, diffusion, active transport, passive transport Warm-up Questions: What is homeostasis? Which organelle is.

Get On Task MT 13 Passive Transport TOPIC: MY GOAL: Fri 12.07.12 MT 13 Passive Transport TOPIC: MY GOAL: Get On Task I will discover the meaning of ISOtonic, HypOtonic, Hypertonic #1 PICK UP Lab Sheet! Write your NAME & PD at TOP, RIGHT Think about 2 group members to work with you #2 LOOK OVER READING from ISN pages 107 AND 109 Active/Passive Transport Concentration Gradient Sodium Potassium Pump Protein Channels Diffusion/Osmosis/ Facilitated Diffusion Dynamic Equilibrium Energy Inhibitors Selective Permeability Osmosis/Diffusion

Selectively Permeability of the Cell Membrane Selective Permeability

Transport Through a Cell LAB AS A CLASS Demo #1 Raman Noodles DRY vs WET over night What happened to Raman when in water…? How did the mass change? Demo #2 Potatoes 1cm vs 2cm vs 3cm  Covered in blue stain Look at Data Table, Observations Answer questions…

Transport LAB, cont. GROUPS OF 3 Activity #3 Grapes READ Background FIRST… NOW Under PROCEDURE, cross out #1 If not done already  NUMBER/LABEL your cups Look at the DATA TABLE to do this! Identify your cups as YOURS…! To MASS the grapes – use the ‘boat’…. LISTEN! When finished, place all 5 cups on counter under your classes Post-It notes… Activity #4 Gummy Bears Same process as with grapes  See ABOVE!!!

Notes… ISN p.108 Q: Why are cells so small? What factors limit cell size to microscopic? A: The ratio of cell membrane Surface Area to Cell Volume is a factor that limits cell size… AS CELLS INCREASE IN SIZE THE SA/V RATIO DECREASES. If a cell grows too big then its volume will not have enough surface area to support its needs by diffusion. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wuXSEOKNxN8&safety_mode=true&persist_safety_mode=1&safe=active
