W.01 Write an argument to support a claim that includes clear reasoning, evidence, counter argument, and rebuttal.

Introduction HOOK--Includes an attention getter Includes details/history that highlight the topic (summary) states your thesis

Hook—gains the reader’s attention How can a viewer bear to miss a second of this spectacular sport; receivers fly, defenders block, and quarterbacks scramble.

Background Even though football is idolized by many, recent studies have shown how dangerous it can be, and people question whether or not it should continue.

Thesis However, football has more advantages than disadvantages and will always be important to many people.

Unifier You want your paper to read like a continuous argument which effective transitions help to facilitate. So, for the concluding sentence of the 1st body paragraph, you want to restate the topic and then mention what’s to come.

Example of a Unifier Not only does football bring people together, but it can also help strengthen cities.

What is a Counterargument? Counterarguments are part of good persuasive writing and speaking strategy because they show that you've considered other points of view. They also set up the chance to refute the opposition and show why your position is the right one to have. Placing a counterargument in your persuasive essay increases your ethos (credibility) because it shows fairness.

What are some counterargument sentence starters?   Critics argue that…  While it may be true that…, still…  Others may say that… but one could argue…  It may be true…, however….  It is often thought…

Example Counterargument Others may say that traffic before and after a game is a huge inconvenience to drivers.

What is a rebuttal? A refutation or disapproval of the counterargument. Example: However, being able to attend an NFL game is not an opportunity every city gets to experience.

How do I write a Conclusion? Restate your thesis in one complete sentence Restate your two reasons in one complete sentence. Why is your essay important to readers? Why should they do/believe what your thesis says? Or a call to action or recommendation

Sample Conclusion Watching football is one of America’s favorite past times. It is not only enormously popular but also incredibly beneficial to society. I look forward to watching this amazing competition every Fall and winning my Fantasy Football league once again!
