Treaty of Versaille, Public opinion after WWI, and rise of Nazi Party Michael Wahl Period 7 1/26/17

World War I (The Great War) Started with the Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria Central Powers (Germany, ottoman Empire, and Austria-Hungary) vs. Allied Powers (United States (1917-1918) Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy, and Japan America entered with the sinking of the Lusitania by a German Submarine Ended in 1918, 4 years later, with the treaty of Versailles

Treaty of Versailles The treaty of Versailles is composed of 15 parts and 440 articles Signed by Central and Allied Powers Signed in June 28, 1919 in France Hitler Denounced the treaty in 1935. Most important Article: Article 231- Germany took full responsibility for the war and would pay reparations

The parts of the treaty Part 1: Created the covenant of the new League of Nations Part 2: Set the new boundaries for Germany Part 3: stipulated a demilitarized zone that separated Germany from the Saar. Part 4: Stripped Germany of it's colonies Part 5: Greatly reduced Germany's military

Parts (Continued) Part 6: Determine terms for returning POWs and treatment of the graves of the fallen Part 7: terms for trials of people accused of war crimes Part 8: Established Germany's liability for reparations Part 9: Established other financial obligations for Germany to follow Part 10: Economic clauses such as shipping

Parts (Continued) Part 11:Aerial navigation terms Part 12:regarded terms having to do with German railroads, ports, and waterways Part 13: regarded to labor Part 14: Established guarantees for western and eastern Europe if Germany succeeds in following the terms of the treaty. Part 15: Misc. Provisions for Germany to follow.

Public opinion after WWI Germans as expected resented the treaty since it mainly punished them In the U.S., the senate was against ratifying the treaty while the people were for the treaty. France, United Kingdom, and Italy all were for and against it since all three got things they wanted and things they didn't

THE RISE OF THE NAZI PARTY BEFORE THE GREAT DEPRESSION The Nazi party was vastly unpopular compared to other political parties in Germany. During political elections, the Nazi party only held 2.6 percent of the political standings, which is .4 percent les than 4 years ago, where they held 3 of the polls. They were relitively small and were made up of only a few members.

RISE OF THE NAZI PARTY During and post-depression During the depression, the nation of Germany was incredibly weak. The Nazi party decided to use this to their advantage. Hitler used the widespread anger to bring rise to the most powerful Nazi party yet. On January 30, 1932, Hitler became chancellor of Germany and brought rise to a new Nazi dictatorship.
