Chapter 1 Turning Points in World History

SECTION 1 The very first words in scripture reveal how the world was created.

SECTION 1 Creation – God spoke the world into existence Divine Sovereignty - God performs everything according to His will. (p. 4)

SECTION 1 Unlike everything else that God created, we were created in HIS image! Wow! Our characteristics show what God is like - The ability to think, love, use language, know right & wrong, and enjoy relationships. All human societies are religious in some way, because we were created in God’s image.

SECTION 1 God created us with a job to do ! We were to be fruitful and multiply and have dominion over every living thing. We have the responsibility of taking care of all that God has given us. This is considered the Creation Mandate.

SECTION 1 The Fall of humanity occurred when tempted by Satan, in the form of a serpent, Adam & Eve sinned by eating fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. In our very fallen state, God promises redemption. Victory over sin!

Section 1 Once the Fall had taken place, the human race would be divided. Seed of The Serpent Seed of The Woman

Section 1 Adam and Eve Cain Abel Seth Offered Crops Offered Sacrifice First fruits of the ground First born of the flock God rejected the offering God accepted the offering Moved to Nod where Killed by Cain out of sheer He became a father of a rebellion to God group of people who were possibly the first to live in civilization Seth Meaning Appointed

Section 1 Grieved by the sinfulness of the human race, God determined to judge the world. He chose to show favor to one member of the Sethite line. He instructed Noah to build an ‘ark’ meaning, literally, a box! :)

Section 1 While Noah was building his box (ark), God withheld judgment for 120 years! And then the flood came.... : Noah’s family, along with the animals brought on the ark, were the only survivors of God’s judgment.

Section 1 Noah’s ark eventually rested on Mount Ararat.

Section 1 Due to Ham’s wickedness, Noah placed a curse on Canaan, one of Ham’s sons. Genesis 10 is often called the Table of Nations because it lists the descendants of Shem, Ham, and Japheth according to the nations.

Section 1 Decades after the flood, civilization spoke one language and did not follow the Creation Mandate God’s response to the Tower of Babel was the different languages and the spread of civilization. Here is were the first nation’s were formed http://therightscoop.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/tower-of-babel-19-jun-091.jpg

Section 2 2166B.C. – ( Genesis Ch. 12) Abraham lived in Mesopotamia, the land between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers

Section 2 Covenant - A solemn agreement or promise The Abrahamic Covenant seed (descendants) land (the land of Canaan) Universal Blessing (His seed would bring a blessing to all the nations of the earth) https://wheelsms.files.wordpress.com/2013/06/abraham-friend-of-god-dry-brush.jpg

Section 2 Abraham Isaac Jacob (brother Esau) Twelve Sons which would become the Nation’s Twelve Tribes

Section 2 Mosaic Covenant – Follow God’s Ten Commandments and they would be a special nation Ten Commandments – tells Israel how to love God and others Monotheism – the belief in one God - Jehovah

Section 2 David – King of Israel - descendant of -Jacob through Judah Davidic Covenant – David’s dynasty will last forever with his descendants which would result in the Messiah – the anointed one http://www.gosai.com/krishna-talk/graphics/satkona-picts/David_Goliath.jpg

Section 2 David’s descendants disobeyed the law of Moses The Fall of Israel happened in 586 BC when the Babylonians destroyed Jerusalem and took many people captive.

Section 2 God always offers New Covenant ( through Jeremiah) – God’s promise to put His rules in the hearts of His people so they would want to obey

JESUS “CHRIST”- “ANNOITED ONE” Section 3 JESUS “CHRIST”- “ANNOITED ONE” Jesus of Nazareth – Most important human who ever lived

Covenants Explained http://www.jointhebibleproject.com/?video=2-3 S.A. Ch. 1 Act 3 Comparing Covenants

Section Review pg. 14 # 1-4 The three main promises of the Abrahamic Covenant are the promise of a seed, the promise of a land, and the promise of universal blessing. The Ten Commandments are the laws are the center of the Mosaic Covenant. They Showed Israel how to love God and other humans. The Davidic Covenant promised David’s dynastic would last forever. This covenant reveals that David’s descendants would play a special role in fulfilling the Abrahamic Covenant. In the New Covenant God promised to put His laws in His people’s hearts so that they would want to obey Him.

Section 3 Answer these questions: 1. Who is Jesus of Nazareth? The Messiah, the descendant of David whom God promised to fulfill the dominion Adam failed to fulfill 2. What did Jesus do? Established the kingdom of God by dying for our sins and rising again. He offers eternal life to all who repent and believe. 3. What are Christians to do? Seek to live in victory over sin. (repenting of their sin and believing the gospel) Obey God’s rules-not to become right with God but because His Spirit is in them and leads them to love God

Section 3 – The Coming of the Christ Gospel – Jesus died and was raised again to rescue men from their sins The most important turning point in history was the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Jesus as Savior, Christ and Lord Savior means that Jesus would deliver His people from their sinful condition Christ means that He is the Messiah Lord means that He fills the Davidic Covenant

Section 3 Judaism – religion of Jews, distinct from Christanity Saul of Tarsus was an early enemy of Christianity until he was converted. After his conversion, he (Paul) helped spread the Gospel and plant many churches. http://goldenageofgaia.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/Saul-22.jpg

What caused the early spread of Christianity? The Holy Spirit at Pentecost The conversion of Saul of Tarsus The destruction of Jerusalem in AD70

Section 3 Nero – ignited Roman persecution of Christianity put the blame on Christians for the fire that destroyed Rome in AD 64, http://www.livius.org/site/assets/files/3094/nero_mus_munchen.jpg

Diocletian – generated the most widespread persecution Dismissed Christians from the army Ordered destruction of churches Had Bibles burned Decreed they would offer sacrifices or be killed http://www.ancient.eu/uploads/images/2276.jpg?v=1431031192

Constantine Constantine- converted to Christianity Issued the Edict of Milan (AD313) -ended persecution Council of Nicaea AD 325 – Confirmed these truths Deity of Christ- *Jesus is God* Trinity – God in three persons http://www.nationalgeographic.com/lostgospel/_images/_timeline/10_01.jpg

Section 3 God is Forever Augustine - Wrote City of God Christian leader God is Forever http://historylink101.com/art/Sandro_Botticelli/images/06_St_Augustine_jpg.jpg

Nestorians In the seventh century sent missionaries into China. Taught Jesus was God and human but was not a single person

Section 3 Patrick – 300s Helped spread Christianity as a missionary to the country of Ireland http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2009/03/090316-st-patricks-day-facts.html http://www.angelsarenearus.com/home/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/st-patrick.jpg

Section Review pg. 21 # 1-5 The angels referred to Jesus as Savior because He would deliver His people from their sinful condition. Christ meant that He was the Messiah. Lord meant that He would fulfill the Davidic Covenant. The gospel is the truth that Jesus has died for the sins of humans and has been raised again to save them forever. The three causes of the early spread of Christianity are the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, the conversion of Saul of Tarsus, and the destruction of Jersulam AD 70. The key event that happened in AD 313 was the Roman emperor Constantine issued the Edict of Milan, which ended nearly 3 centuries of persecution. The Nestorians are the group that sent missionaries into China by the seventh century.
