29. How did the map of europe change throughout the 1900s 29. How did the map of europe change throughout the 1900s? (Many possible answers!!!) Austria-Hungary split into 2 countries by 1922. Russia was renamed the Soviet Union by 1922. Germany lost land by 1922. Germany was split into 2 countries in 1945. The Soviet Union gained a lot of land in 1945. Yugoslavia was added as a country by 1922. Poland was added as a country by 1922. Czechoslovakia split into 2 countries after the Cold War ended. Yugoslavia split into 8 countries after the Cold War ended. The Soviet Union split into 15 countries after the Cold War ended. Germany reunited as 1 country when the Cold War ended. Ukraine was added as a new country after the Cold War ended.

30. Why did the map of europe change so much in the 1900s? Wars & treaties changed country borders. (losing countries lost land, winning countries gained land)

The European Union

31. What is the European Union (EU)? An economic and political group formed after World War II.

32. Why was the European Union started? (List 1) To improve relationships between countries To increase trade To keep peace and prevent war

33. What is a tariff? A tax on imported goods, used to prevent trade. A tariff makes something more expensive for a consumer. Example: Dairy products (yogurt, milk, cheese) from other countries have a 20% tariff added when they are brought to the United States. So, if American yogurt costs $3, how much would that same yogurt cost if it was made in China and imported to the U.S.?

34. Name 3 advantages of being an EU member. Workers and goods travel freely from one EU country to another No passport needed to go to an EU country if you live in the EU No tariffs, so goods are cheaper Stability and peace

35. Why would an American travelling to Europe need to know a currency exchange rate? They can’t pay in U.S. dollars, so they need to know how much their money is worth in that country’s money. Example: If you go to Spain, you would pay in euros. $1= .88 euros 1 euro= $1.13.

36. What is the common currency used by EU member countries? The euro

37. What is a European country that is not an eu member? Switzerland Norway Iceland Russia Andorra Vatican City Serbia Macedonia Turkey Albania Bosnia & Herzegovina Ukraine Belarus
