Daryl Wright Tom Kriger Sheilah Goulart Director of Research Introduction Daryl Wright Vice President , Employer Partnerships YouthBuild USA Somerville, MA Tom Kriger Director of Research North America’s Building Trades Unions Washington, DC Sheilah Goulart Executive Director YouthBuild San Joaquin San Joaquin County Office of Education Stockton, CA

Today’s Objectives Describe program practices that sustain relationships with Building Trades Councils Review strategies to initiate relationships Discuss ideas that involve Building Trades Council representative in ongoing program planning and development

How YouthBuild adds value to the building trades Provides access to well-trained workers from under-represented groups Can help the trades fulfill local hiring requirements YouthBuild can customize training to fulfill union requirements Participate on committees and testify at government agencies to advocate for Project Labor Agreements and Local Hiring Ordinances

Sustaining relationships with local building trades councils Research planned construction projects and create training Invite trades people to assist with community service projects Ask the Building Trades to do a hands-on career fair Provide students with the proper academic and worksite experiences Follow-up with YouthBuild graduates placed in apprenticeships

Involving building trades in program development and planning Ask Building Trades representatives to participate in an industry advisory group Regularly attend the Apprenticeship Coordinators meeting in your area Ask apprenticeship coordinators for input on the construction curriculum Integrate union activities into your curriculum

Instead of asking unions to do things for your program, my advice is to identify what your program has to offer unions. Sheilah Goulart
