Lesson Nine Pre-emptive Openings

Rules up until NOW 1 level openings – points 1NT opening – points BUT sometimes we have less then 12 points but still have some desire to get into the bidding … when???? We have a LONG suit of our own – i.e. 6 or more cards in the suit

NEW OPENING BIDS – 2 level 2 6 – 10 points with a GOOD 6 card diamond suit 2 6 – 10 points with a GOOD 6 card heart suit 2 6 – 10 points with a GOOD 6 card spade suit A GOOD suit is a suit with 2+ honours in the suit Once you have opened these bids your will rarely bid again … you have JUST one shot These bids are DESTRUCTIVE … we want to make it hard for the opposition

NEW OPENING BIDS – 2 level 2 6 – 10 points with a GOOD 6 card diamond suit 2 6 – 10 points with a GOOD 6 card heart suit 2 6 – 10 points with a GOOD 6 card spade suit NOTE THAT 2 is not used to show this type of hand The 2 opener is a SPECIAL bid showing a STRONG hand These bids are DESTRUCTIVE … we want to make it hard for the opposition

PLAY OF THE HAND – THE FINESSE The FINESSE is an attempt to gain a trick with a card that would normally be beaten by a higher card. West East A Q How can we make 2 tricks in this suit? Play a low card up to the Queen if South does not play the King Hope that South has the missing KING

PLAY OF THE HAND – THE FINESSE West East A 9 8Q J 10 How can we make 3 tricks in this suit? Play the Queen, if South does not play the King, play a low card Hope that South has the missing KING

PLAY OF THE HAND – THE FINESSE West East K How can we make 1 trick in this suit? Play a low card from East up to the King Hope that South has the missing ACE

PLAY OF THE HAND – THE FINESSE West East K Q How can we make 2 tricks in this suit? Play a low card from East up to the King then do it again up to the Queen Hope that South has the missing ACE

PLAY OF THE HAND – THE FINESSE As a GENERAL rule When you have missing honours, keep an eye out for an opportunity to FINESSE
