The Role of the Law in A1 S1 Feedback PRINCE Rebellious subjects, enemies to peace, Profaners of this neighbor-stainèd steel!— Will they not hear?—What, ho! You men, you beasts, That quench the fire of your pernicious rage With purple fountains issuing from your veins, On pain of torture, from those bloody hands Throw your mistempered weapons to the ground, And hear the sentence of your movèd prince. Three civil brawls, bred of an airy word, By thee, old Capulet, and Montague, Have thrice disturbed the quiet of our streets And made Verona’s ancient citizens Cast by their grave-beseeming ornaments, To wield old partisans in hands as old, Cankered with peace, to part your cankered hate. If ever you disturb our streets again, Your lives shall pay the forfeit of the peace. For this time, all the rest depart away. You, Capulet, shall go along with me, And, Montague, come you this afternoon To know our farther pleasure in this case, To old Free-town, our common judgment-place. Once more, on pain of death, all men depart. The Role of the Law in A1 S1 What impression do you get of the law in R&J and why? Feedback 1 – Read the speech out loud to the person next to you? 2 – Select/underline and annotate words which show the Prince is taking charge and giving orders to the Capulet and Montague family and the ‘loyal subjects’ – Annotate for – what you think it shows and why? 3 – Evaluate – In an extended response – “The Prince is strong and in control” – How far would you agree with this statement?

Live Model Evaluate In the Prince’s speech he appears very strong “Enemies to Peace” as it suggests the whole town has been fighting with thought about how life should be (peaceful and without violence). His tone is angry as he has walked into the middle of a civil brawl. You should: Link to the statement/question Quote Explain what the quote means Give a reason about how/why the Prince behaves in this way.
