Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration PHOTOSYNTHESIS Most important biological process on earth Fills food requirements & needs for fiber & building.
By Mrs. Kristin Shaw. At the end of this lesson you should be able to: ▪ Define Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration ▪ Explain where each process happens.
Energy All chemical processes in the cell require energy. Both plant and animal cells obtain energy from “ energy-rich” compounds, such as glucose (sugar)

IT’S A GREEN WORLD Who planted that there?

STARTER Can you identify these trees? a. b. c. d. Oak Sycamore Scots Pine Ash f. g. h. Horse Birch Holly Yew Chestnut Students to write down all the names they know.

Who planted that there? Learning outcomes Success criteria Explain how the cellular structure of a leaf is adapted for efficient photosynthesis You will be able to identify the different parts of a leaf and a plant cell. Understand the process of photosynthesis

The structure of a plant cell Lets start with the basics……………. The structure of a plant cell Cell wall – gives support Nucleus – controls cell function LD/SD Students to fill in labels on worksheet Chloroplasts – where photosynthesis takes place Vacuole – holds water and gives shape

Task Now draw a fully labelled plant cell from memory (include the functions of the relevant parts).

How do plants get the food they need? All living organisms need food to grow and survive. Plants are known as producers because they provide food for many other organisms. Discuss with students Plants cannot move very much, so how do they get the food that they need?

Nutrition in green plants Green plants are amazing because they actually make their own food! Green plants are the only living organisms that are able to do this. All other organisms rely on plants because of the food that the plants make. What is the name of the process by which plants make their own food? Discuss with students

What is photosynthesis? Plants make their own food by photosynthesis. This process is a chemical reaction that uses light energy. light energy The word photosynthesis comes from the Greek language: Discuss with students ‘photo’ means ‘light’ ‘synthesis’ means ‘putting together’ Photosynthesis just means ‘putting together with light’.

Photosynthesis Discuss with students

Take a look inside a leaf Students to annotate worksheet on leaf structure.

The structure of a leaf Complete worksheet B4a2 Structure of a leaf How a leaf is adapted to photosynthesise

Plenary Photosynthesis quiz

Who planted that there? Learning outcomes Success criteria Explain how the cellular structure of a leaf is adapted for efficient photosynthesis You will be able to identify the different parts of a leaf and a plant cell. Understand the process of photosynthesis
